Peak Pizza? Domino's Pizza Leader Exits Following Pivot Towards Chicken.

The chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the United Kingdom might have reached peak pizza while expanding the chain into fried chicken has been replaced after tensions with its governing body.

Executive Transition

Rennie is exiting after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a long-term chief.

The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to pivot Britain's largest pizza food delivery firm towards chicken offerings, remarking in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the British pizza industry. He observed chicken was the most rapidly expanding food category in the globe.

Governance Disagreements

It is understood that there was friction between Rennie and the governance team over his approach and direction, although Domino's announcement said he was stepping down “through mutual consent”.

New Brand Launch

In the autumn, the chain launched its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which the former chief referred to as a “bold new chapter” for the group – and is testing it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.

While the firm is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as scheduled, it considers fried chicken as a supplement for its main pizza offerings.

Board Statement

Ian Bull, the Domino's chairman, said: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to enhance value and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing identifying the right chief executive to lead the systematic rollout of that expansion plan.”

Industry Challenges

In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said sales fell by 1.5% in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the quick-service industry had “become tougher” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.

Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain revealed the closure of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the firm behind its British operations faced financial collapse.

Wellness Initiatives

Responding to consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has rolled out lower-calorie items, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of bakes below 400 kcals as well as vegan and wheat-free options. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A family cheese pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a personal has 909 kcal.

Acting Management

Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and was formerly with the gambling company a well-known operator. It is understood that she prefers not to occupy the chief executive role permanently.

She commented: “We have a number of ongoing growth and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on carrying out at pace.”

She added these comprised additional efforts on the company's supply chain and product development, and its loyalty scheme.

Domino's is also lacking a full-time finance director until March 16, when Andrea joins from the Irish cider and beer maker C&C Group. For now, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
