A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

The explosion took place as police and firefighters went into the house close to the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Two individuals were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled subsequent to the explosion was found not long after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area revealed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an court order due to debts accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had taken place on a story above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
